THE WILLIAMS BUILDING, SAN FRANCISCO, CA
Webcor ICG recently performed a renovation/restoration of The Williams Building. The building is a 9 story steel frame building with brick aggregate concrete floor slabs and masonry cladding which was built in 1907. In recent years it has been most notable for the distinctive artwork on the east and south facades black and white arrows pointing upward and downward with the words Sky and Ground. The building was damaged during the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake and a seismic retrofit consisting of interior steel braced frames on the north and east facades, and exterior shear walls on the south and east facades was installed in 1994. The buildings new function will be to house many of the facilities of the St. Regis Museum Tower, a 42 story high rise 5 Star hotel and high end condominium building which Webcor Builders is constructing right next door.
The retrofit of the building included asbestos abatement and exterior restoration including masonry, terra cotta, windows and sheet metal cornice. The temporary steel seismic brace frame was removed from the interior of the north and east facades and replaced with interior shotcrete walls. Additionally, the existing roof deck was removed and the 9th floor deck was converted to a rooftop garden terrace.
On the interior of the building, the basement will house the electrical entrance for the project. A restaurant will occupy the ground floor with a kitchen on the second floor. The 3rd floor will be exhibition space for the Museum of African Diaspora. The 4th floor will contain the support areas for the banquet room including offices and public restrooms. There will also be a spa and fitness center and administrative offices for the hotel operations.
