Construction of the 32-story, W San Francisco luxury hotel occurred while the design concept and interior layout were still being developed, with the final design completed only three months prior to the opening date. To meet the owner’s aggressive schedule, Webcor utilized flying forms instead of traditional scaffolding, and supported the forms on column rollers. This innovation for the structural concrete allowed us to eliminate reshores and proceed with finish work at an accelerated pace. By using two sets of deck forms rather than one, we were able to leapfrog the work and achieve a one-week floor-to-floor cycle – reducing the structural construction schedule by 20 percent. Although it was started at the same time as its sister tower in Seattle, the W San Francisco was completed four months earlier. Adjacent to the Museum of Modern Art, the W is located at the intersection of two busy streets. Because the building footprint fills the entire site, there was room for only one day’s worth of material storage and a single crane. Construction required precise material delivery and staging as well as task and trade coordination around the use of the crane. By building the concrete structure during the day, and erecting precast panels at night, we ensured the site restriction did not affect the schedule. |
