The California Academy of Science consists of 409,178 square feet of research laboratories, exhibition halls, auditoriums, and educational and office space designed by Pritzker Prize winning architect Renzo Piano. The new building houses the Steinhart Aquarium, Morrison Planetarium and the Kimball Natural History. 

The water treatment system for the Steinhart Aquarium treats nearly 12 MGD of salt and fresh water via an above and below ground network with over 12,000 linear feet of 8” to 36” piping. The system has a tank capacity of 500,000 gallons and utilizes horizontal and vertical sand filters, fractionators, ozone, de-aeration towers and vertical Granulated Activated Carbon (GAC) filters to provide clean fresh and salt water for 40,000 live animals. 

In addition to being the Prime Contractor for the project, Webcor also self-performed all of the structural concrete associated with the facility. The total concrete yardage for the California Academy of Science was 42,000 cubic yards which was placed in nine months. The concrete work included several varying radius walls, tanks, sloped surfaces and a concrete roof that had multiple domes with side slopes as steep 44 degrees.
