The MWH Webcor team building the SFPUC's Biosolids Digester Facilities Project (BDFP) helped convert a 4,000-square-foot vacant space into the District 10 Community Market, the area's first free food market.
Why it matters: The USDA has called Bayview Hunters Point a "food desert." Residents need more access to healthy, affordable food. The market will serve 4,500 Bayview residents every month, combating food insecurity.
The District 10 Community Market is a 4,000-square-foot food pantry that offers a wide selection of free groceries to those in need. It also connects families to social services and serves as a community hub.
Zoom In: BHPMSS Senior Services approached BDFP Project Director Rowena Domingo. They needed help permitting the proposed market. "Our team got the permit. We also brought in our trade partners to cut costs and provide value engineering, given the site's issues."
Team Recognition: The MWH Webcor team thanked all who donated time and profits to bring the community market to life:
The team recognizes the contribution of the folks who pushed the project along including John Wilson, Candace Kong Kee, Matt Volkmann, Caroline Galle, Grace Prendiville, Chanelle Jones, Shiv Khanagavi, Ruby Sephton-Villegas, and Nicole Rangel. In addition, Jerome said, "We couldn't have done this without our field carpenters who are also residents of District 10, Dexter, Rodney, Josh, D’Mar, and everyone else who contributed."
