This four-star hotel project strategically located for travelers of all types on the corner of Howard and 5th streets in the heart of San Francisco’s South of Market neighborhood consisted of the construction of a 32-story poured-in-place concrete tower with two below-grade levels for parking, 550 rooms and suites, 21 meeting rooms with flexible configurations, a swimming pool, a 12,000 square foot health spa, two ballrooms, and a six-floor podium for a total of 564,614 square feet. The exterior design features a glass curtain wall system with a faceted and stepped façade. The project showcased several sustainable building features including high-efficiency boilers and water heaters, low-emission glass to keep the solar gain down on the exterior, several local materials, and a highly-integrated building management system to reduce energy consumption. Before construction could begin, Webcor had to excavate marsh deposit soils beneath the foundation and fill in the subsequent voids with concrete slurry nearly every day. Because of the project’s location on the corner of two high-traffic streets, Webcor maintained a close working relationship with the Department of Parking and Traffic and remained sensitive to the building’s neighbors. The project team managed to finish four days ahead of schedule even after having to extend the planned completion date due to extenuating weather-related circumstances. The project earned LEED Gold certification.
