The Mexican Museum at 706 Mission was recently recognized at Engineering News-Record's 2020 Regional Best Projects awards, winning an Award of Merit in the Cultural/Worship category!

As an integral scope of the 706 Mission project, the Mexican Museum encompasses the first five floors of the new 43-story building as well as the adjacent 114-year-old historic Aronson Building – the only building in San Francisco that survived both the 1906 earthquake and fire and the 1989 Loma Prieta earthquake.

Working on a building as old as the Aronson came with its challenges. Given it was built in 1903, the drawings were outdated and, at times, inaccurate. These discrepancies came to light when the team was tasked with connecting the historical building with 706 Mission, finding that the two buildings weren’t orthogonal.

In an effort to align the floors between the two buildings, the team turned to teamwork and technology. They set up weekly meetings with all stakeholders needed to discuss the immediate alignment work to be completed, while leveraging Autodesk’s AEC tools to manage the ever-changing project information.

The team’s impressive collaborative efforts – both in person and digitally – led to the successful rehabilitation and retrofitting of the Aronson Building for the Mexican Museum. Transition beams were installed to connect and level the floors, and collector beams were also installed to safely bear and funnel the weight loads between the two buildings vastly different in age.

When ENR announced a call for nominations for their Regional Best Project awards, Webcor’s partners at PlanGrid immediately thought of the impressive work from Webcor’s Mexican Museum team. After working closely with Webcor Project Manager Kenny Hua and Project Director Greg Scott on the submission, PlanGrid nominated the project on Webcor’s behalf.

Congratulations to the project team on this fantastic win, and a huge thanks to PlanGrid - an AutoDesk Company for nominating the project!
